Acupuncture

Acupuncture is an integral part of all the drug and alcohol detox, rehab and recovery programs at the Reawakenings Wellness Center. It not only relieves the physical pain that accompanies detoxification, but also helps recovering dependents relax and rejuvenate through the entire addiction treatment program.

What is acupuncture?

Traditionally, one of the components of traditional Chinese medicine, Acupuncture is an umbrella term covering a collection of several procedures that involve stimulating certain parts of the body by penetrating the skin with needles. It is believed that the stimulation of different acupuncture points aids in correcting any imbalances that may have occurred in the flow of qi – the Chinese term for “life force” or “energy”.

According to traditional Chinese medicine a disease is essentially an imbalanced interaction between the yin, yang, qi, meridians and so on or between the environment and the body. The acupuncture therapy one receives is based on the particular imbalances caused. Typically the traditional diagnosis is done in four stages – inspecting the face, tongue and teeth, ausculation and olfaction, inquiring and palpating.

Acupuncture as part of addiction treatment

Acupuncture forms the foundation for alcohol and drug detox, rehab and recovery programs. Detoxing from any addiction is physically taxing for the addict and failed attempts at rehab often result in relapses. Ear acupuncture is administered at this stage to reduce anxiety, reduce physical pain, build immunity as well as rid the body of toxins.

Stimulation of the cranial nerves in the ear directly signals the brain to start producing hormones like Endorphins and dopamine which regulate a sense of normality and an overall wellness in the body. The use of ear acupuncture to facilitate drug and alcohol detoxification dates back to 1972, in Hong Kong and owing to its successful application, has been picked up by various health care and medical facilities since then.

Is acupuncture safe?

Yes it is! The use of acupuncture in the treatment of certain health conditions has been approved officially by several health institutions around the globe including the National Institutes of Health in US, the National Health Service of UK, the WHO as well as the National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine.

It is not unlikely to be skeptical of the method, since acupuncture involves penetration by needles. But, when administered by trained professionals it is a safe procedure with numerous benefits and very low risk of adverse effects.

At Reawakenings Wellness Center we have licensed and certified massage therapists ready to help you recover the addiction and restore physical, emotional and psychological well being using the time honored form of ancient Chinese medicine – acupuncture.
